Then you coat it and there is a chemical reaction with the organic compounds still in the wood or lurking in the cracks and gaps.

Overall hardwood floors are fairly durable and easy to maintain but cat urine is a still a formidable opponent for any surface. Sometimes you may sand the floor stain it and tint it to where it looks 100 percent better. The floor may seem clean but urine can seep between the boards or beneath cracks in the sealant if their are any. Any urine accidents on the aforementioned floors can result in a nasty problem urine soaked into your subflooring.

I think i will have to sand and restain to restore them. You may be able to remove dog or cat urine that has soaked into the wood but some situations may require replacement of the subfloor. Older heavily used wood floors porosity makes the problem even worse since the urine is allowed to soak into the wood. I recently investigated an area where i found a terrible cat urine odor.

The urine has soaked into the floor through the gaps or cracks down to the tongues and grooves and beyond. I lifted a rug and found stains on the hardwood floors underneath. The urine had soaked through the rug and into the hardwood and made dark stains that even after cleaning and left to dry didn t go away.
